THE GOLDEN INVASION! Sargassum Season 2023 Update

We persist in our sargassum monitoring as we move throughout the 2023 season and so far, sargassum is piling on beaches across the Caribbean. Influxes have been consistent since our last report as we have been observing heavy inundation in sargassum beaching for both Jamaica and Anguilla.

Fresh sargassum levels are now above average along the western coastline of Jamaica while Anguilla is experiencing severe influxes on its southern shores. We look forward to what’s in store for our next report.

MGI and our sargassum watchers provide images from Jamaica and Anguilla showing sargassum beaching for August. Sargassum spp is a genus of holopelagic brown macroalgae typically found in temperate and tropical areas of the world. Blooms have been increasing in frequency and intensity since 2011.
